When he died childless in 1803 his complicated will left the profits of the Bridgewater Canal to Lord Stafford’s (Earl Gower became Marquis of Stafford in 1786) eldest son, George Granville Leveson Gower, the future first Duke of Sutherland.
Biografia. Era il primogenito di Granville Leveson-Gower, I marchese di Stafford, e della sua prima moglie, Lady Louisa Scroop. Studiò a Westminster School e alla Christ Church di Oxford . Carriera politica e diplomatica. Fu deputato per Newcastle-under-Lyme (1779-1784) e per Staffordshire (1787-1799).
Il titolo baronale fu nuovamente conferito (1824) a Sir George William Jerningham (1771-1851); il titolo di marchese nel 1786 a Granville Leveson-Gower (1721-1803), che fu lord presidente del Consiglio (1767-79); suo figlio George fu creato (1833) duca di Sutherland.
