Beauclerk was born on 21 August 1765. He was the eldest son of Aubrey Beauclerk, 5th Duke of St Albans by his wife Lady Catherine Ponsonby. He entered the Foot Guards in 1781 and was appointed a captain of 34th Regiment of Footon 30 July 1783 and a Lt Colonel in 1789. On 16 February 1788, he joined Brooks's Club, the exclusive gentlemen's club, where he played whist.
