In late 1961, after visiting Saigon, Taylor recommended sending 5,000 to 8,000 US support troops to help South Vietnam resist the growing Viet Cong insurgency. Impressed with Taylor’s advice and ability, President Kennedy appointed him Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on 1 October 1962.
