Philip Cunliffe-Lister, 1st Earl of Swinton, GBE, CH, MC, PC (1 May 1884 – 27 July 1972), known as Philip Lloyd-Greame until 1924 and as The Viscount Swinton between 1935 and 1955, was a prominent British Conservative politician from the 1920s until the 1950s.
Present peer. Mark William Philip Cunliffe-Lister, 4th Earl of Swinton (born 15 September 1970), is the son of the 3rd Earl and his wife Elizabeth Susan Whitelaw, eldest daughter of William Whitelaw, 1st Viscount Whitelaw. He was styled as Lord Masham between 2006 and 2021.
24 mar 2023 · The castle, originally built in the late 1600s but largely remodelled in the 1760s, was bought by Earl Swinton’s ancestor, Samuel Cunliffe-Lister, 1st Baron Masham, in 1888. In the 1920s, Samuel’s granddaughter, Mary Constance ‘Molly’ Boynton, and her husband, Philip, came to live at Swinton and took the name of Cunliffe-Lister.
Philip Cunliffe-Lister, First Earl of Swinton, left all his papers to Churchill College. The first instalment was collected from Swinton Castle in November 1972 (SWIN I). Another 19 boxes were discovered and transferred to the College in August 1974 (SWIN II).
Born Philip Lloyd Grame, he was the husband of Mary Constance Cunliffe-Lister, granddaughter of the first Baron of the 1891 creation, and had assumed the surname of Cunliffe-Lister in 1924 when his wife succeeded to the substantial Masham estates.
