George Crook (born Sept. 23, 1829, near Dayton, Ohio, U.S.—died March 21, 1890, Chicago, Ill.) was an American army officer in the American Civil War and in the Indian conflicts of the West. General William Tecumseh Sherman called him the best of the Indian fighters and managers.

George Crook – Fighter and Friend to the Indians. General George Crook was a career United States Army officer, most noted for his distinguished service during the Civil War and the Indian Wars. He was assigned to the 4th U.S. infantry as a brevet second lieutenant, serving in California from 1852 to 1861.
