Stefano Uroš II Milutin ha segnato per la Serbia un periodo di ascesa politica e di promettente indipendenza economica legata all'attività mineraria e allo sviluppo dei commerci. Di qui certa volontà di sostituire una propria moneta ai ‛ grossi ' veneziani che facevano premio in Adriatico, in Serbia e in tutti i Balcani e nel Mediterraneo.
