Nakşidil Sultan (Ottoman Turkish: نقش دل سلطان; "embroidered on the heart"; also Nakşi Sultan; 1761 – 22 August 1817) was a consort of Sultan Abdul Hamid I, and Valide Sultan to their son Mahmud II, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.
Nakşidil became Vâlide Sultan (sultana) “Mehd-i ulyâ-yı saltanat-ı seniyye” when her son Mahmud II succeeded to the throne on the 28 th of July, 1808. With the regiment of Valide, she was taken from the Eski Saray to the Topkapı Palace on the 8 th of August.

She is famous because protagonist of a legend that she was captured by Barbary pirates, sold as a harem concubine, and was the same person as Nakşîdil Sultan, mother of Sultan Mahmud II of the Ottoman Empire; but this has been debunked.
