The future al-Radi was born on 20 December 909, to the caliph al-Muqtadir ( r. 908–932) and a Greek -born slave concubine named Zalum. [5] [6] At the age of four, he received the nominal governorship of Egypt and the Maghreb, and was sent with the commander-in-chief Mu'nis al-Muzaffar to Egypt, who became his tutor. [6]
Al-Radi wrote several books on Islamic issues and interpretation of the Quran. His most well-known book is Nahj al-Balagha. His elder brother al-Sharif al-Murtada was also a theologian and poet. His work is still published in the universities of Cairo and Beirut, and is part of the course of Arabic literature.

Abū l-ʿAbbās Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn al-Muqtadir, il cui laqab fu "al-Rāḍī bi-llāh" , è stato un califfo della dinastia abbaside. Regnò dal 934 al 940, succedendo allo zio al-Qahir, deposto dagli esponenti più potenti della sua Corte.
Al-Radi studied under great scholars such as al-Shaykh al-Mufid in various branches of Islamic sciences and Arabic literature. Ibn Abi l-Hadid in his book Sharh Nahj al-Balagha reports that al-Shaykh al-Mufid once dreamt that he was sitting in his mosque in Karkh area in Baghdad when Lady Fatima (a) came to him with her two little sons, Hasan (a) and Husayn (a) , and said, "Teach these two boys."
