Alfonso IX (15 August 1171 – 23 or 24 September 1230) was King of León and Galicia from the death of his father Ferdinand II in 1188 until his own death. He took steps towards modernizing and democratizing his dominion and founded the University of Salamanca in 1212.

Su hijo Fernando III el Santo acabaría uniendo en 1230 los reinos de Castilla y de León mediante la Concordia de Benavente, lo cual supondría el surgimiento de la Corona de Castilla .
Alfonso IX (born 1171, Zamora, Leon [Spain]—died September 24, 1230, Villanueva de Sarria, Galicia) was the king of Leon from 1188 to 1230, son of Ferdinand II of Leon, and cousin of Alfonso VIII of Castile (next to whom he is numbered as a junior member of the family).

Alfonso IX. Zamora, 15.VIII.1171 – Villanueva de Sarria (Lugo), 24.IX.1230. Rey de León (1188-1230). Hijo de Fernando II (1157-1188), rey de León, y de su mujer Urraca Alfonso, llamada “La Portuguesa”, por su procedencia. Fue bautizado en la catedral de Zamora.
