Er war Sohn des Grafen Esico von Ballenstedt und dessen Frau Mathilde. Adalbert wird nach 1033 erstmals erwähnt. 1069 war er Graf im Nordthüringgau, später in den beiden Gauen Nizizi und Serimunt.
