Sorella di Leopoldo II fu invece l'infelice Carlotta (1840-1927), moglie di Massimiliano imperatore del Messico, fucilato nel 1867; dopo quel crudele colpo arrecato ai suoi affetti e alle sue ambizioni, Carlotta visse in stato di demenza per quasi sessant'anni.
