Jean-Louis Pons (24 December 1761 – 14 October 1831) was a French astronomer. Despite humble beginnings and being self-taught, he went on to become the greatest visual comet discoverer of all time: between 1801 and 1827 Pons discovered thirty-seven comets, more than any other person in history.
Biography Index. Born into a poor family, Pons was hired as a porter by the Observatory of Marseille in 1789. He learned astronomy from the Observatory's directors and soon began to make observations that led him to discover new celestial bodies, particularly comets.

Jean-Louis Pons (1761-1831) discovered his first comet in 1801, and went on to find 37 more in his career many of them at Marseilles Observatory. The Comet Pons-Brook was discovered by Pons in July 1812, however it was not seen again until June 1883. (The next time it was recovered was in 1953.)
