Edmond (or Edmund) Halley FRS (/ ˈ h æ l i /; 8 November [O.S. 29 October] 1656 – 25 January 1742 [O.S. 14 January 1741]) was an English astronomer, mathematician and physicist. He was the second Astronomer Royal in Britain, succeeding John Flamsteed in 1720.

One of the early globetrotting scientists, Halley led several maritime expeditions to far-flung places to compile reliable data on the Earth's magnetic field.

Edmond Halley. Nato a Londra, dal 1673 studiò a Oxford rivelando interesse per la matematica e l'astronomia. A vent'anni si recò a Sant'Elena per eseguire il rilievo delle costellazioni australi. Tornato in patria pubblicò il Catalogus Stellarum Australium (Londra, 1678) e fu eletto membro della Royal Society.
