John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh, OM, PC, FRS (/ ˈ r eɪ l i /; 12 November 1842 – 30 June 1919) was a British mathematician and physicist who made extensive contributions to science. He spent all of his academic career at the University of Cambridge.
3 apr 2024 · Lord Rayleigh, English physical scientist who made fundamental discoveries in the fields of acoustics and optics that are basic to the theory of wave propagation in fluids. He received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1904 for his successful isolation of argon, an inert atmospheric gas.

Fisico inglese, premio Nobel (1904), nato a Langford Grove (Essex) il 12 novembre 1842, morto a Wilham (Essex) il 30 giugno 1919. Studiò al Trinity College di Cambridge; e ivi nel 1879 fu chiamato a succedere al Maxwell come "Cavendish professor" di fisica sperimentale.

Si laureò alla Università di Cambridge e divenne professore di fisica sperimentale e direttore del Laboratorio Cavendishdella stessa città.
Le sue ricerche sulla densità dei gas lo condussero alla scoperta del primo gas nobile dell'atmosfera, l'argo: appunto per tale scoperta, effettuata in collaborazione con W. Ramsay, gli fu assegnato il premio Nobel per la fisica nel 1904. Fisico (Langford Grove, Essex, 1842 - Witham, Essex, 1919).
