Sir Charles Wyville Thomson FRSE FRS FLS FGS FZS (5 March 1830 – 10 March 1882) was a Scottish natural historian and marine zoologist. He served as the chief scientist on the Challenger expedition ; his work there revolutionized oceanography and led to his being knighted.
Sir C. Wyville Thomson (born March 5, 1830, Bonsyde, West Lothian, Scotland—died March 10, 1882, Bonsyde) was a Scottish naturalist who was one of the first marine biologists to describe life in the ocean depths.

Nato il 5 marzo 1830 a Bonsyde (Linlithgow, Inghilterra) e ivi morto il 10 marzo 1882. Studiò medicina a Edimburgo, ma subito si volse alle scienze naturali; dapprima (1850) fu professore di botanica all'università di Aberdeen, poi nel 1853 professore di scienze namrali al Queens College di Cork, successivamente e fino al 1868 a Belfast.

5 mar 2022 · On March 5, 1830, Scottish natural historian and marine zoologist Charles Wyville Thomson was born. Thomson served as the chief scientist on the famous Challenger expedition surveying and exploring the oceans for more than 130.000 km between 1872 and 1876 .
Incentivata dallo scozzese Charles Wyville Thomson dell'Università di Edimburgo e della Merchiston Castle School, la Società Reale di Londra ottenne l'uso di una nave, l'HMS Challenger, dalla Marina Reale e nel 1872 la adattò alla ricerca scientifica, equipaggiandola con laboratori separati di chimica e storia naturale.
