John Cromwell Mather (born August 7, 1946, Roanoke, Virginia) is an American astrophysicist, cosmologist and Nobel Prize in Physics laureate for his work on the Cosmic Background Explorer Satellite (COBE) with George Smoot . This work helped cement the big-bang theory of the universe.
Brief Bio. Dr. John C. Mather is a Senior Astrophysicist in the Observational Cosmology Laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. His research centers on infrared astronomy and cosmology.
Nel progetto Mather è attualmente capo della parte scientifica. Oltre a ciò propose insieme a David Leisawitz una missione chiamata SPECS (Submillimeter Probe of the Evolution of Cosmic Structure) con un interferometro nel lontano infrarosso, ora evoluta nel progetto SAFIR (Single Aperture Far InfraRed telescope) destinato a succedere a JWST.
