Robert Rathbun Wilson (March 4, 1914 – January 16, 2000) was an American physicist known for his work on the Manhattan Project during World War II, as a sculptor, and as an architect of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), where he was the first director from 1967 to 1978.

15 lug 2020 · Robert R. Wilson. Wilson was the youngest of the research leaders at Los Alamos, first as head of the cyclotron group and later the entire research division. He went on to become founding director of Fermilab, and helped launch the Federation of American Scientists and its initial focus on civilian control of nuclear energy.
Bob Wilson was one of the leading architects of the golden age of high energy particle accelerators, starting with his early cyclotron work with E.O. Lawrence at Berkeley, where he received his PhD in 1940, and culminating in his leadership of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory with the world's highest energy accelerator.
