Young master butcher Fidelis Waldvogel promises his dying friend in a World War I trench that he will take care of his pregnant fiancée Eva. At the end of the war, he returned to his homeland and married her, but since he could not find a job, he decided to emigrate to the United States.
After WWI, butcher Fidelis Waldvogel starts afresh in North Dakota and founds a singing club for the local emigre community, but disaster strikes.
