He specialised in genre scenes and is noted for his trompe-l'œil "niche" paintings and candlelit night-scenes with strong chiaroscuro .
Gerrit Dou è stato un pittore olandese nato il 7 aprile 1613 a Leida, nei Paesi Bassi. Gerrit ha ricevuto le prime lezioni di arte dal padre, incisore e produttore di vetro. Nel 1628, il quattordicenne Gerrit fu mandato a studiare pittura sotto la guida di Rembrandt van Rijn.
