Alexander Helwig Wyant (January 11, 1836 – November 29, 1892) was an American landscape painter. His early works belonged to the Hudson River School, with its direct pastoral narrative, but evolved into the more moody and shadowy Tonalism.
Biography. Alexander Helwig Wyant was born on 11 January 1836 at Evans Creek, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Before he was two his family moved to Defiance, Ohio, where he attended school and was apprenticed to a local harness maker. In the 1850s, while working as a sign painter in Port Washington, Ohio, Wyant decided to pursue a career as an artist.
Alexander Helwig Wyant (January 11, 1836 – November 29, 1892) was an American landscape painter. Also known as Alexander Wyant, A. H. Wyant, he was active as an artist in Arkville, New York, and Keene Valley, New York, among other places.

Landscape painter in the style of George Inness. His early paintings followed closely the Hudson River tradition, while the later—infused with low-key colors, atmospheric features and poetic interpretation—are representative of tonalism.
