Hendrik Willem Mesdag ( Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦɛndrɪk ˈʋɪləm ˈmɛzdɑx]; 23 February 1831 – 10 July 1915) was a Dutch marine painter . Biography. Preparations for departure. Pinks in the breakers, c. 1880. He was born in Groningen, the son of the banker Klaas Mesdag and his wife Johanna Wilhelmina van Giffen.
Hendrik Willem Mesdag. Mesdag (1831-1915) was already 35 in 1866 when he decided to become an artist. Until then he had been working at his father's bank and had drawn purely for pleasure. To pursue his studies he moved to Brussels, where his teacher was the Dutch painter Willem Roelofs.
