Daniel Niklaus Chodowiecki (16 October 1726 – 7 February 1801) was a German painter and printmaker of Huguenot and Polish ancestry, who is most famous as an etcher. He spent most of his life in Berlin , and became the director of the Berlin Academy of Art .

Pittore acquafortista e disegnatore, nato a Danzica il 16 ottobre 1726, morto a Berlino il 7 novembre 1801. Prima impiegato di commercio a Danzica e a Berlino, fu poi messo a studiare la pittura a smalto. Nel 1754 cominciò a far le prime prove nella pittura a olio, che imparò da Bernhard Rode scolaro di Pesne.

Daniel Chodowiecki was a German genre painter and engraver of Polish descent who developed a particular talent for recording the life and manners of the German middle class. Largely self-taught, Chodowiecki achieved his first popular success with the sentimental painting The Parting of Jean Calas.
