Edward Palmer Thompson (3 February 1924 – 28 August 1993) was an English historian, writer, socialist and peace campaigner. He is best known for his historical work on the radical movements in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, in particular The Making of the English Working Class (1963).
Prof. all'univ. di Leeds (1948-65), poi al Centro di storia sociale dell'univ. di Warwick. Unì al lavoro di storico un intenso impegno politico prima nel Partito comunista (1942-56), poi nella nuova sinistra inglese e nel movimento pacifista.
Storico britannico, nato a Oxford il 3 febbraio 1924, morto a Upper Wick (Worcester) il 28 agosto 1993. Insegnò dal 1948 al 1965 al dipartimento esterno dell'università di Leeds e quindi fu professore al Centro di studi di storia sociale dell'università di Warwick.
E.P. Thompson (born Feb. 3, 1924—died Aug. 28, 1993, Upper Wick, Worcester, Eng.) was a British social historian and political activist. His The Making of the English Working Class (1963) and other works heavily influenced post-World War II historiography.
The Making of the English Working Class [1] is a work of English social history written by E. P. Thompson, a New Left historian. It was first published in 1963 by Victor Gollancz Ltd, [2] and republished in revised form in 1968 by Pelican, [3] after which it became an early Open University set book.
Edward Palmer Thompson, known as E. P. Thompson, was an English historian, writer, socialist, and peace campaigner whose work has had a lasting impact on British heritage. He is best known for his seminal historical work, "The Making of the English Working Class," published in 1963.
