Alfred Austin DL (30 May 1835 – 2 June 1913) was an English poet who was appointed Poet Laureate in 1896, after an interval following the death of Tennyson, when the other candidates had either caused controversy or refused the honour.

29 mag 2024 · Alfred Austin was an English poet and journalist who succeeded Alfred, Lord Tennyson, as poet laureate. After a devoutly Roman Catholic upbringing and a brief career as a lawyer, Austin inherited money and published a lively and well-received satirical poem, The Season (1861).

Biography. Appointed Poet Laureate in 1896, Austin was born in Headingley and was educated at Stonyhurst College, St Mary’s College and at the University of London. His upbringing was Roman Catholic but moved towards agnosticism over time.

Scrisse alcuni drammi mediocri ( Savonarola, 1882; Flodden Field, rappresentato senza successo nel 1903, al teatro His Majesty's). I modesti meriti letterarî dell'A. consistono in una certa freschezza descrittiva nella dipintura di paesaggi inglesi.
