James Lee Burke è nato a Houston (Texas, USA) il 5 dicembre 1936 ed è cresciuto sulla costa del Golfo del Texas-Louisiana. Ha frequentato il Southwestern Louisiana Institute e in seguito ha conseguito una laurea in inglese e un master presso l'Università del Missouri rispettivamente nel 1958 e 1960.
