Mary Gilmore. Dame Mary Jean Gilmore DBE (née Cameron; 16 August 1865 – 3 December 1962) was an Australian writer and journalist known for her prolific contributions to Australian literature and the broader national discourse. She wrote both prose and poetry.
Mary Gilmore, 1927. Mary Gilmore (née Cameron) was a poet, author, journalist, and social campaigner. She is especially well-known for her two most famous poems, “ No Foe Shall Gather Our Harvest ” (1940) and “ Nationality ” (1942), both written during the Second World War.
Mary Gilmore's significance is both literary and historical. As poet and prose writer she has drawn considerable praise from such connoisseurs of literature as McCrae, FitzGerald, Judith Wright, Douglas Stewart and Tom Inglis Moore.

Mary Gilmore. 1865-1962 | NSW | Poet and journalist. Dame Mary Gilmore was a writer whose outspoken advocacy of universal social justice, nationalism and the often forgotten aspects of Australian rural life in 19 th Century Australia made her a legend during her own long lifetime.
Mary Gilmore was born Mary Jean Cameron on 16 August 1865, at Mona Vale, near Goulburn, New South Wales. The eldest child of Donald and Mary Ann Cameron, ‘Jeannie’ (as she was known by her family) was less than a year old when the family sold the property and moved west to the prospering region of Wagga Wagga, on the Murrumbidgee River.
