John Frederick Clute (born 12 September 1940) is a Canadian-born author and critic specializing in science fiction and fantasy literature who has lived in both England and the United States since 1969.
John Clute is a Canadian-born sf critic, editor and author, who has won multiple Hugo and Locus awards. He is best known for his encyclopedic works on sf, fantasy and horror, such as The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and The Darkening Garden.
The first edition, edited by Peter Nicholls with John Clute, was published by Granada in 1979. It was retitled The Science Fiction Encyclopedia when published by Doubleday in the United States.
