Walter Marty Schirra Jr. (⫽ ʃ ɜːr ˈ ɑː ⫽, March 12, 1923 – May 3, 2007) was an American naval aviator, test pilot, and NASA astronaut. In 1959, he became one of the original seven astronauts chosen for Project Mercury, which was the United States' first effort to put humans into space.
18 giu 2024 · Astronaut Walter M. “Wally” Schirra, one of the original seven astronauts for Mercury Project selected by NASA on April 27, 1959. The MA-8 (Mercury-Atlas) mission with Sigma 7 spacecraft was the third marned orbital flight by the United States, and made the six orbits in 9-1/4 hours.

6 giu 2024 · Wally Schirra was a U.S. astronaut who flew the Mercury Sigma 7 flight (1962) and was command pilot of Gemini 6 (1965), which made the first space rendezvous. He was the only astronaut to fly in all three of the early U.S. crewed spaceflight programs—Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo.
