Storia. Nel 1659 gli spagnoli fondarono sulla sponda opposta del Rio Grande l'insediamento di El Paso del Norte, oggi Ciudad Juárez. L'importanza della città, ed il motivo della sua fondazione, era data dal fatto che rappresentò per più di due secoli l'unico valico terrestre (ponte) sul fiume Rio Grande per accedere dal Messico al Texas.
