Elisabeth Antoinette Irwin (born Aug. 29, 1880, Brooklyn, N.Y.—died Oct. 16, 1942, New York City) was an American educator, psychologist, and one of the leaders of the progressive education movement. Irwin attended Smith College (B.A., 1903) and became involved in the social-settlement movement, working in New York City.

In the early 1900s, Elisabeth Irwin, John Dewey and other progressive educators developed a new educational approach based on active learning instead of passive absorption of facts. “The complacent formalism of schools, its uncritical and therefore uncreative spirit, must be replaced by an honest hospitality to experimentation,” Irwin wrote.
Often considered the city’s first progressive school, the Little Red School House in Greenwich Village was founded by lesbian reform educator Elisabeth Irwin. She lived nearby at 23 Bank Street with social researcher and feminist biographer Katharine Anthony, her partner of 30 years.
