Sharon Katharine Van Etten nasce a Belleville, in New Jersey, il 26 febbraio del 1981, terza di cinque figli. Sin da subito animo ribelle, passa l'infanzia e l'adolescenza in varie parti del New Jersey, iniziando tra le altre cose a cantare per il coro della sua high school (la North Hunterdon) e a partecipare a gig musicali soliste.
