History Aerial photo of Bellefonte in July 2007. William Lamb sold his mill to John Dunlop in 1794. The following year, John’s father James Dunlop and John’s son-in-law James Harris (1756-1841) laid out the town that would become known as Bellefonte.

Bellefonte, self-proclaimed as “Central Pennsylvania’s Victorian Secret,” holds rich history and culture in the Alleghenies region. Founded in 1795, Bellefonte has retained much of its Victorian architecture against a backdrop of the natural landscape and has been home to seven governors from three states.
Bellefonte Historic District is a national historic district located at Bellefonte, Centre County, Pennsylvania. The district encompasses 296 contributing buildings in the central business district and surrounding residential area of Bellefonte. The oldest building in the district is the Col. James Dunlop House dated to 1795.

Historic Bellefonte is both the county seat of Centre County and the “Victorian Jewel” of Pennsylvania! The Bush Arcade building was built in the late 1880s. Located 12 miles northeast of State College and Penn State, it is considered one of the best preserved historic towns in the United States.
