Key Figures. Over 153 million children worldwide are orphans. Over 71 million orphans live in Asia, 59 million in Africa, and almost 9 million in Latin America and the Caribbean islands. 31 million orphans are found in India. In 2007, there were a reported 15 million AIDS orphans.
There are thousands of orphans in Afghanistan; this is, in fact, a direct consequence of the armed conflict which ravaged the country. Nevertheless, only a very few children are left to their own devices since the Afghan culture, mainly based on Muslim principles, makes it obligatory for Afghans to help children in need.
Indeed, 22 ‰ of Palestinian children die before the age of five. The causes of this high infant mortality rate are varied: anemia, nutritional deficiencies or even severe malnutrition. Access to health care services can prove extremely problematic in Palestine due to the presence of the wall and checkpoints.
Orphans and displaced children. Children can also suffer from collateral effects of conflicts such as the loss or severance of family ties and their internal or external displacement (UNICEF, 2022).
Though the parents of a majority of them are still alive, such children find themselves being “social orphans” due to poverty or ill-treatment and abuse in their family. Once in public care, they may find themselves victims of both emotional and physical violence and they may also be at risk of being sexually abused.
SOS Children Villages estimated that 1,300,000 children are orphans in Tanzania, mainly due to HIV. Great support is provided by local community to Most Vulnerable Children (MVC), a more generic term to reduce stigma associated with the general term of Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC) which is generally associated with AIDS orphans.
