A small town with a long history and strong Māori identity. Since the early 19th century, the area has been home to Māori of the Ngāti Raukawa iwi who migrated from the Kāwhia area from about 1819, under the leadership of the chief Te Rauparaha. There's so much to see and do – it's a hidden gem in the greater Wellington region, though many visitors may only know Ōtaki for its great outlet shops and cafes. Ōtaki has three district areas, each with its own unique character and attractions.
There are waiting lists everywhere. To have halted the language loss and generated its revival in such a short time remains an astonishing feat. The most recent statistics show that 50 percent of the town’s Māori population and 13 percent of the total Ōtaki population of around 6,000 people are able to use the language.
