Artiodactyls are placental mammals belonging to the order Artiodactyla ( / ˌɑːrtioʊˈdæktɪlə / AR-tee-oh-DAK-tih-lə, from Ancient Greek ἄρτιος, ártios 'even', and δάκτυλος, dáktylos 'finger, toe'). Typically, they are ungulates which bear weight equally on two (an even number) of their five toes: the third and fourth, often in the form of a hoof.

1 apr 2024 · An artiodactyl is any member of the mammalian order Artiodactyla, or even-toed ungulates, which includes pigs, hippopotamuses, camels, antelopes, cattle, and others. It is one of the larger mammal orders, containing about 200 species, and is of more economic and cultural benefit than any other group of mammals.
Suidae is a family of artiodactyl mammals which are commonly called pigs, hogs or swine. In addition to numerous fossil species, 18 extant species are currently recognized (or 19 counting domestic pigs and wild boars separately), classified into between four and eight genera.
The earliest known artiodactyl genus, the rabbit-sized Diacodexis, appeared about 55 million years ago. At that time, Artiodactyla exhibited little diversity when compared to Perissodactyla . However, evidence suggests that artiodactyls had significantly radiated by the Oligocene and artiodactyl fossils from this time period have been found throughout Asia, Europe, and North America.
