The name of this parish was anciently written Aulton, which signifies Old Town: about the reign of King John it assumed the name of Kersaulton; it was afterwards varied in the records, to Kersalton, Carsalton, Cresalton, and Kresalton: it has now for near two centuries been uniformly written Carshalton.
