Chaves County is a county in New Mexico, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 65,157. Its county seat is Roswell. Chaves County was named for Colonel Jose Francisco Chaves, a military leader there during the Civil War and later in Navajo campaigns.

Welcome to Chaves County. Visit to see the UFO attractions, visit Bitter Lake, or check out the Mescalero Sand Dunes. The Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art opened its doors in Roswell in 1994 to showcase works of art produced by former fellows of the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program.
Chaves, county, southeastern New Mexico, U.S. Most of Chaves county lies in the Great Plains, with the extreme western section including the Guadalupe and Sacramento Mountains and a portion of the Lincoln National Forest. On the east lies Mescalero Ridge.
