Godt trat am 1. Juli 1918 als Seekadett (Crew 1918) in die Kaiserliche Marine ein und absolvierte die Marineschule Mürwik bis zum 6. Oktober 1918. He retained the title, but was replaced as operational commander at BdU by his chief of staff Eberhard Godt. Godt's successor was Admiral Hans Georg von Friedeburg, who held the position at the end of the war and became commander-in-chief of the German navy when Dönitz became head of Nazi Germany after Hitler's suicide.

Eberhard Godt began his naval career in the Kaiserliche Marine in the last year of WWI. After the ceasefire in November 1918 he left the Navy, rejoining the newly-renamed Reichsmarine in March 1920. His first years as an officer were mostly spent on the torpedo boats G-10 and T-155.
