1823: Francisco Castro and his wife Maria Gabriela Berryessa become the first European settlers in what was to become Contra Costa County. 1834: Formal title granted to the Castro family to Rancho San Pablo, about 18,000 acres of land, including what would become the towns of San Pablo, Richmond, and El Cerrito.
