Paraíba, located in the eastern portion of the broader Northeast region, is one of 27 states of Brazil. Its total area is 56,467.242 km 2, making it the seventh smallest state in the country and the fourth smallest in the Northeast.
A Paraíba é uma das 27 unidades federativas do Brasil, localizada a leste da Região Nordeste. Seu território é dividido em 223 municípios e apresenta uma área de 56 467,242 km², sendo um pouco menor que a Croácia.
The history of Paraíba began before the discovery of Brazil, when the coastline of the state's current territory was populated by the Tabajara and Potiguara indigenous peoples. When the Portuguese arrived, the region was established as part of the Captaincy of Itamaracá.
It is the largest city in, and capital of, the state of Paraíba with an estimated population of 833,932 (as of 2022). It is located on the right bank of the Paraíba do Norte river.
