The Roman Seminary (Pontificio Collegio Romano) is the major seminary of the diocese of Rome. The Council of Trent in its 23rd session decreed the establishment of diocesan seminaries. Its history can be traced to the Roman Seminary established by Pope Pius IV in 1565.
SEMINARY EDUCATION. In ecclesiastical writings "seminary" designates a special type of school dedicated to the spiritual, moral, and intellectual formation of the clergy. It is derived from the Latin word seminarium, which was commonly used to describe a place where young seedlings were prepared for eventual transplantation.
