The Texas State University System, founded in 1911, is the first higher education system established in Texas. Created to consolidate the support and management of state teacher colleges, the System has evolved into a network of higher education institutions stretching from the Texas–Louisiana border to the Big Bend region of west Texas.

As Texas State’s student population has grown — from 303 in 1903 to nearly 38,376 in 2022 — the campuses, too, have expanded and today Texas State is the seventh largest public university in the state.
Texas State University is part of the Texas State University System and is governed by a nine-member Board of Regents. Other universities in the system include Sam Houston State University, Lamar University, and Sul Ross State University.
