The last creation was in 1604 for Thomas Sackville, 1st Baron Buckhurst. In 1720 the seventh earl was created Duke of Dorset in the Peerage of Great Britain. On the death of the fifth duke in 1843 the peerages became extinct. [1]

Thomas Sackville, Lord Buckhurst and first Earl of Dorset, was the son of Sir Richard Sackville, and was born at Withyam, in Sussex. He was educated at both universities, and enjoyed an early reputation in Latin as well as in English poetry.
His only surviving son, Thomas Sackville, was a statesman, poet and dramatist and notably served as Lord High Treasurer between 1599 and 1608. He was raised to the Peerage of England as Baron Buckhurst, of Buckhurst in the County of Sussex, in 1567, and was made Earl of Dorset in 1604, also in the Peerage of England.
