  5. Get Directions. Website. http://www.cem.va.gov/CEMs/nchp/woodlawn.asp. In 1861, the town of Elmira, NY was a training and marshalling center for Union troops. After the troops had been sent out on duty, and the barracks were empty, the buildings were used as a prisoner-of-war camp.

  6. Cemetery History. Woodlawn was chartered by the State of New York in 1858 and is comprised of 184 scenic acres. Its paths and avenues wind through hills and wooded areas with towering trees, family plots, mausoleums, lovely marble sculptures and hand carved memorial stones.
