Conan il barbaro è un film del 1982, diretto da John Milius. È ispirato al personaggio dei racconti fantasy Conan il barbaro, ideato da Robert Ervin Howard sulle pagine di Weird Tales nel 1932. Nel 1984 è stato realizzato un sequel stand-alone Conan il distruttore.
Grazie al grande successo ottenuto in patria dalla serie, a partire dal 1997, l'anno successivo alla creazione della versione animata, è cominciata la produzione da parte della TMS Entertainment di lungometraggi animati, distribuiti nelle sale giapponesi a cadenza annuale nel mese di aprile.
