Nato col nome di Scum nel 1988, nel 1992, all'arrivo del cantante Johan Hegg, il gruppo cambiò genere musicale (prima suonavano death metal) e il nome in Amon Amarth, per il quale trassero ispirazione dalla mitologia di J.
