Il Balliol College è uno dei collegi costituenti l'Università di Oxford. Fondato nel 1263 da un gruppo di accademici scozzesi su iniziativa del nobile John de Balliol, ha una forte tradizione politica potendo contare su tre ex-alunni che sono poi diventati primi ministri britannici.
History. Balliol has existed as a community of scholars on its present Broad Street site without interruption since about 1263. By this token it claims to be the oldest college in Oxford, and in the English-speaking world.
Origins. The early history of the ancient University of Oxford is shrouded in uncertainty. It came into existence about eight hundred years ago, but in its early days it lacked organisation and facilities. Students had to fend for themselves in small groups based on inns and lodging houses.

This Gothic range of Balliol College, built in 1867–9, is known as the Brackenbury Buildings. It was designed by along with the adjoining Master’s Lodgings, and was his first Oxford commission. It is Grade II listed (List Entry No. ). The main entrance to the college is through the central gate tower.
