In 1967 Bernie Wrightson won the springboard at the Pan American Games and the following year, prior to winning his Olympic gold medal, he equalled Gary Tobians record of seven AAU outdoor diving championships. Wrightson attended Arizona State and in his senior year (1966), won the NCAA springboard.
