Bernie Wrightson has long been nicknamed “Master Of The Macabre.” But for the Inkwell Awards and ink artists, it should be “Master Of The Brush And Pen.” Few if any of his era exemplify that moniker more. Biography. In 1967 Bernie Wrightson won the springboard at the Pan American Games and the following year, prior to winning his Olympic gold medal, he equalled Gary Tobian ’s record of seven AAU outdoor diving championships. Wrightson attended Arizona State and in his senior year (1966), won the NCAA springboard.
