17 mag 2018 · We’ve tracked down over 200 years’ worth of old maps of Bow, Globe Town and Mile End so you can trace the lines of the borough’s history. It is believed that Bow got its name from the shape of the arched bridge over the River Lee, built after Queen Matilda fell into the ford in 1110 and nearly got swept away in flood water.
Mile End | Hidden London. Mile End, Tower Hamlets. A contrasting district of 18th-century terraces and postwar tower blocks, situated west of Bow. Mile End’s name derives from a hamlet – first recorded in 1288 – that grew up one mile from Aldgate.
Bow is the north-east part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. For Planning Policy purposes, a Neighbourhood Plan is being prepared for an area referred to as Roman Road Bow. This area affected includes much of Bow and part of Mile End.

Mile End and Bow. This is a jolly marvellous walking tour of Mile End and Bow in London’s east end. Back in Victorian times this was one of the poorest areas of London but these days it’s rather spiffing.
