Upon receiving a B.A. in Communications, Sampson was selected by the Houston Rockets as the Number One pick in the NBA Draft. As a rookie, he averaged 21 points and 11 rebounds and won the NBA Rookie of the Year.

In college, he earned three ‘Naismith Awards’ as the ‘National Player of the Year’ and also a couple of ‘Wooden Awards.’ After his junior year, he could have been part of the 1982 ‘NBA Draft,’ playing for the ‘Los Angeles Lakers,’ but decided to stay at school instead.
On November 2, 2012, he was selected by the Reno Bighorns in the third round of the 2012 NBA Development League Draft. He went on to average 2.3 points and 2.1 rebounds in 23 games for Reno in 2012–13. On September 7, 2013, Sampson signed a one-year deal with Nilan Bisons Loimaa of the Finnish Korisliiga.
